I’ve been hesitating to post on this because even though I am a dick, it just didn’t seem right given the proximity to Christmas. Now that Christmas is long gone and the new year is here, it is time to address the layoffs announced a couple weeks back at Creative Loafing.
It is no secret that we are not fans of Wade Tatangelo, and frankly I don’t know that there are many fans of Wade Tatangelo period. I won’t gloat in his demise, but I must admit that it is something Creative Loafing should have taken care of ages ago. Wade, no hard feelings, start a blog and you’ll be back on top in no time. Maybe leave the music writing to the crew over at Reax, though.
On the other hand, it is no secret that we ARE INDEED fans of Alex Pickett. Why on earth Creative Loafing would choose to let Alex go while retaining others (a goddamn wine editor?!) will be yet another feather in the cap of what-the-fuckyness that is the bay area. Seriously, CL, Alex is probably the best thing going in the local media.
It should be no surprise that while dead tree media like Creative Loafing struggle to survive, the coffers at Splog Central runneth over. That’s right, kids, we’re making HUGE INTERNET MONEY! As such, we would like to extend an offer for Alex Pickett to join the Splog empire. This is your big day, Alex, you have no idea the amount of free coke and ass your official Splog badge will afford you.
Just imagine, Alex may even lend a much needed air of class and sophistication this blog has been accused of lacking. I see big things in our future, children.

Wow. Thanks guys. I like the offer; it’s much better than standing at the intersection of 22nd and I-275 with a sandwhich board: “Will report for food.” Though I hope I”m allowed to do that, too.
if you’re wondering why creative loafing kept its local wine editor, take a close look at her last name and that of creative loafing’s publisher.
This is weird– I’ve read this blog for a little over a year and when I got to this article and clicked on the link to see why you don’t like Wade, I was shocked… I am the “music geek” from his post, and I never saw that until today.
Not that it really matters, and I’m sure no one is really interested, but that was not even close to what happened. A friend of his was on the same kickball team as me and we often discussed music as we had similar taste. One night I decided to grab a drink with him at MacDinton’s and Wade showed up. The friend introduced me to him (and mentioned that he was the music critic for the Loaf) and, since we were talking about upcoming shows, I tried to be nice and asked him if he was going to cover the upcoming Hot Hot Heat show or Interpol. He said no, but that he might cover some pop artist (I forget who, but along the lines of Rhianna or Timbaland) at the Forum. I said “oh”. And that was it. I didn’t recognize him (I never heard of him before then), I didn’t go up to him, and he was by himself drinking a beer from a plastic cup.
Maybe some time in the unemployment line can teach him how to be humble again.
I thumbed through some of his last posts and saw his top ten of ‘08 list. Metallica’s Death Magnetic at number #9….which he describes a song from as “Metal masters are back - with a fierceness.” Later, Wade. Good luck at your next gig managing a Waffle House– if that’s not too pedestrian for your tastes.
PS
On a lighter note, I’m glad to see the blog is back and really enjoyed the post on St. Pete’s Guggenheim. I always wondered what the story was with that building.
