I have been thinking a lot lately and more than usual my thoughts keep coming around to “what the fuck is wrong with this place?” And no, I’m not setting up some funny story here, I’m being serious. What the fuck is wrong with this place?
I don’t even know how to address this story correctly. Rape and robbery at a new restaurant on Central? How the fuck does that even happen? Why does that happen? What is wrong with humans that live in Florida?
This is such a messed up story and I definitely don’t want to make light of it. But seriously, this is yet another example why we can’t have nice things here. Someone opens Table, which becomes instantly popular and seems like a good sign of the health of Central… and then look what happens.
Please, Florida, show me some redeeming qualities in the very near future or I’m out.
got a tip?

What happened at Table is awful, reprehensible, very bad. Unfortunately this kind of shit behavior isn’t limited to St. Pete, or Tampa Bay, or Florida. People do shitty stuff all over the country and world. It’s good to know that you care - so many people are so stuffed up their own asses they dont’ know if it’s day or night. But shitty stuff can’t be blamed on a city or state, but on humans and their oftentimes shitty behavior. And you’ll find that everywhere. I mean, the never-ending civil wars in Africa saw gans of men hacking off kids’ arms and raping babies. Babies, for shit’s sake! How could anyone do that? How could those people in NYC 20 years ago listen to that woman being raped in the street, screaming for help, and not do anything?
I feel your pain, in the most real way possible. It’s my pain too. But taking off for points unknown isn’t going to stem the tide of shitty behavior. Fighting the good fight, by calling out bad bahavior and telling the government we won’t put up with it, just might.
CRAZY! I know someone who was mugged and beaten right outside of The Independent the other night. WTF! ????
What the hell kind of Mad Max world is this becoming?
Yeah, bad things happen all over cities and even pseudo-cities like, uhm, here, but that isn’t the point. The point is that many cities have great stuff going on all the time that balances out all the crime and urine-stench and syringes on the pavement. St Pete is getting all the bad stuff, but it doesn’t have the good stuff to balance it out.
A lot of cities are glorious places full of angelic geniuses and bloody-minded felons, all in the same bus or laundromat. Sometimes in the same body. It’s an energizing mix.
The kind of hopeless disgust that Casey expresses is presumably why the Tampa Bay area is 50th out of 50 in Young Creatives retention. The young and creative leave go where they are appreciated and rewarded. What is left is the dregs, ruled over by the sub-mediocre, the geriatric and the hicktarded.
So, the story of the mugging on monday… It was not in front The Independent, it was on Central Ave. The victim had been at The Independent that night, and it was after he left the bar. He and his friend were talking at their cars on Central Ave. The one victim was beaten and all of his stuff i.e. money, phone, fancy camera were stolen. The other victim was not harmed but was robbed as well. The moral of my story is be more careful! This is some serious scary shit! Please guys. As a downtown bartender, I am freaking the fuck out and being a good level of paranoid and you should be too. Go buddy system!!
Where the fuck is spider man? That’s what I want to know. Seriously.
All I can say, calebism, is get involved. I spend like 10 hours a week volunteering for St. Pete Preservation and Defenders of Wildlife, and the positive changes are small but palpable.
I’ve visited all over and lived a few places, and it just isn’t that much better anywhere else. And the places that are rockin’ now have ongoing battles with periods of being shitsville. Every place looks pretty good on paper (well, *most* places look good on paper), but the dialy grind of crime and pollution touches them all. So I decided to take pride in my community -whatever state it’s currently in - and get involved. Like Ghandi said, be the change you want to see. If anyone knows about delaing with shit situations, it’s him.
Also, if you’re not going to work for change you can’t complain. I’m not saying you guys aren’t doing stuff, because how the hell would I know. I’m just saying. Armchair quarterbacks are for football, not real life. That’s like those douchebags who don’t vote but then complain about the government. Nuh uh. Party fowl.
Yeeeeesssssssssss! Send him/her over here, we love partying fowls!
Mandy….you rock…this shit will always go down until we get enough of US to VOLUNTEER for positive efforts that you have described. As an old dude of 60 I could join all you young folks in the desperate pessimism this story helps fuel, but then I remember my best friend Narville from the 3rd grade. My father’s friend asked him how can you let Bobby bring an N*&*&*R into the house?…1956 REALLY SUCKED!!! .I can only say young dudes that things are getting better…not nearly fast enough…but at least in the right direction. When we have enough Mandy’s to reach critical mass we’ll have liftoff on a better society.
Luckily, they caught these scumbags.
