Despite the fact that he is correct, this doesn’t let Aaron off the hook for his bad speculative reporting on the matter. Dammit. Check out the breaking news here.
I look forward to the full story to figure out exactly what changed. Now what the hell will I do with my POWW yard sign? Bust it out again in 2 years? And what does this mean for Al Lang? Another abandoned downtown St. Pete edifice for the next 2 years?
got a tip?

wait wait wait…first you complain that you dont want the stadium going in at Al Lang, now you complain how nothing is there? jeez, make up yr mind! i mean, i know you need stuff to complain about to make all this blogging business viable, but come on.
No, dickwrinkle, Al Lang should have stayed the training home of the Rays. It isn’t anymore, which means it’ll sit there doing a whole lot of nothing. Get it?
The team never properly communicated the money facts to the public. The $70 million from the sale of the Trop and the $75 million from future taxes felt like a shell game, especially considering the buyer was never guarunteed and no one could tell me if the new stadium would be on the tax rolls (unlike the Trop). And that POWW website can suck my balls. There are absolutely NO facts on that site, just fear mongering.
Overall, lack of information about the funding killed this proposal (at least temporarily). Now the real hand greasing can begin.
I think they should develop the strip along 1st south, put some cool little shops and restaurants there, then make the remaining area a park with some noteworthy feature, like one of those big interactive fountains the kids can play in. Perhaps Saturday Morning Market could relocate there…Would be nice to actually have some shade while eating Uhuru eggs and browsing for trinkets.
No facts on the POWW site? Last time I visited it I couldn’t believe the amount of fact-finding homework they’d done - the list of articles and references is about ten miles long. Guess it depends on your definition of “facts” though…
And a major point of theirs was the funding, then also the environment and scale. I don’t see how any reasonable person can say that questioning this stuff is fear-mongering, but again I guess it depends on your definition…
Are these some of the facts POWW supposedly has on their website?
Yep! All of that’s true - they measured the friggin’ thing like 30 times to verify the scale drawing - they’d have to or no one would believe them, right? And the Rays’ own traffic study put the average walk to the staduim, after parking your car, at 3/4 mile. So yeah, facts dude.
And I like how the site you reference says “this topic is being covered extremely well” by Aaron’s blog, which anyone with a working knowldge of journalism would say was about 90% opinion, 10% fact - the antithesis of journalism. Pesky definitions.
I know, you’re all for the stadium so those of us who saw it as a shoving-down-the-throat of an ill-fitting idea are “joy killers” and “thought Nazis.” Thinking people have been called that and worse for centuries - heck, 500 years ago if you said the world was round they’re chop your head off!
At least we didn’t gut the pro-stadium signs!
Oh - and the Rays included parking spaces belonging to mearby churches, who said they knew nothing about it and couldn’t/wouldn’t give up the spaces.
Oh, and the fans listed supporting businesses on their webiste who did not support the new staduim, didn’t give permission to be listed, and were never even contacted about being listed.
But that’s okay, you all are right, we’re a bunch of a-holes - oftentimes standing up against tyrants will get you called that.
Um . . .
baseball killed my grandparents :(
Sorry beau. That must have been hard on you… unless they were nasty mean and abused you and shit. Then baseball would be your best friend, right?
Anyway, I think USF should be invited to play college ball at Al Lang.
Yesterday.
women’s naked soccer would be awesome there.
