Good news on the music front for the ol’ St. Pete with Push Ultra Lounge, which is being booked on Thursday nights by Thx Mgmt (aka REAX publisher Joel Cook). Sure their MySpace will make you run in the opposite direction and you wouldn’t necessarily want to accidentally show up at “Saturday Night Vibe with DJ Scooter,” but Thursday nights are looking pretty kickass in the coming months. The Beauvilles are playing February 14 with Summerbirds in the Cellar following them up on February 21. March 6 you can catch Velveteen Pink and Giddy-Up, Helicopter. Dude, the doctor called, he said you need more live music on Thursdays - get to it!
Here’s the inevitable pessimistic part of the post: please, please, please don’t fuck this up St. Pete. Push is not a small space and all I can see in my head is a really good band showing up and playing for 14 people in a place that should hold 300. I don’t like the Garage, but it comes to mind as a place that could have been a contender for live music but remains maddeningly devoid of rockshow fans. Don’t make this another Garage. This is our chance to actually make St. Pete a place where bands might actually play shows, imagine that shit. And just think, we could all use a few less trips over the bridge with one tied on.
Interesting incestuous side note: tickets for Thx Push shows are sold through Merchline, who also sells our shirts, and may or may not be run by a member of Auto!Automatic!!. Man, the Bay area music/culture/art scene is crazy inbred. Not interesting personal side note: Joel, much love and respect, but you might want to lay off the 100% magenta/45 degree angle thing… I think that even looks old in Florida these days.

I am already booked to see The Beauvilles show Thursday night. I highly doubt I’ll miss the Summerbirds show but seeing as how I have tix for the skippers mofro show on friday and the Lucero show @ the state on Sat. I dunno that I’ll be able to do 3 shows in 3 days but I am gonna try.
Casey,
You and I talked about this last week: (http://reaxmusic.com/posts/view/rabi/the_minor_leagues_of_st_petersburg-190). Sorry, for the blatant self-promotion. I think the tact best to take is cautious optimism. We all know this is an uphill battle but the prospect of a venue being open minded to give a promoter carte blanche toward programming is pretty fucking exciting; especially when you consider many of these bands don’t cross bridges for their shows. The key is getting the word out to our fellow St. Petersburgians (Petersburgites?) and getting them to trust us. But, much love to you for the shout.
Oh yeah, feel free to roast us should we completely fuck this up.
Shit, we’re all about blatant self-promotion ’round these parts. I highly doubt you guys will fuck it up, if it gets fucked up it will be the lack of fans. Hopefully the 3 people that read this blog with any regularity (hi mom!) will shell out the quite reasonable $7 for live music right around the corner.
Also, the new Splog approved term for our ilk is St. Petitebourgeoisie. Ah to be of the lower middle social class.
Casey
If y’all don’t book Nervous Turkey at some point you’re fucking this up.
btw: ninebullets.net the best (only?) music blog in Tampa….yay 9b.net! Site tech held down by Trevor Bramble…husband of Reax personnel, Aubrey Brambell.
The incest continues.
Six degrees to Tommy Duncan… go.
Does the State Theater still draw a crowd? That place used to be the shiz.

Since you are all about the Blantant Self Promotion - wanna be my “Blogger” pannelist at a media presentation I am putting together for Tampa Bay. No point keeping your Anonymity. Plus - I am Ectard alum !
Let me know
peez out!
i live two blocks away from Push. you’d think i had made it there so far but you’d be wrong. i might come and watch candy bars do ‘moon pix’ though, sounds interesting
the state pulls crowds for the shows i attend.
It does look like a high-end booty bar though, dreadfully plasticene and high-gloss, but hell, I just saw the Hold Steady at Czar, and that place is a fucking hellhole. If only the Emerald could host something larger than a crowd of 30. As far as the Garage, it appears to be onlly a matter of time before they close their doors. Nice try though.
