It just wouldn’t be a Splog review if we didn’t boil down 2 hours of important national political conversation into a couple of moderately amusing pictures.

The award for the most impressive public speaker definitely goes to Mike Huckabee. I suppose spending years as a southern Baptist minister will prepare you for lying well in public, but I was impressed with his ability to spit out perfect sound bites that seemed to get the most applause. The award for “holy fucking shit you gotta stop with the plastic surgery” goes to RPOF chairman Jim Greer. Dude, WTF?! Back away from the scalpel.

My favorite moments and observations, in no particular order, which I’ve probably messed up on account of playing the “drink every time somebody says something scary” game.
- When asked about why African-Americans don’t vote for Republicans, Giuliani brought up welfare instead of answering the question. Although, when you think about it, he kinda did answer it just perfectly.
- In the same vein, Romney went a little too far in congratulating another Negro for having a dad. Good job, kid, for keeping your family together, I guess. Romney pledged to give each inner-city African-American child four federally-employed fathers. Problems solved!
- Fred Thompson looks like shit when he’s not on Law & Order, and his promotional video was fascinating for being so bad, such a mistake, and for forcing CNN to cancel a commercial break. I loved how he wasn’t sure what Anderson meant by “What’s up with that?” Crazy kids and their slang.
- Hey, there’s Grover Norquist asking a question! And I thought this was all going to be softballs on the issues that are fresh red meat for the right-wing base of the Republican Party. Silly me.
- McCain blamed Ron Paul for World War II. Ron Paul supporters know that’s silly and ignorant, because WWII was just a conspiracy.
- We’re not going to Mars anytime soon, bitches. Although surely it’d make a great place for all those Katrina refugees. I’m kidding of course. It’d actually be a great place for Hillary Clinton, said the Baptist minister Huckabee! Ever see Total Recall? You know what happens.
- Giuliani has just won the Muslim vote by calling Islam a great religion. Fucking panderer.
- This election is going to be about who isn’t afraid to use the term “Islamic Terrorism” as opposed to just “Terrorism.”
- No wait, this election is going to be about who has the most guns to shoot Mexicans with.
- No wait, actually, this election is going to be about the Yankees and Red Sox.
My favorite comments: those planted by the Hilary campaign troupe. Didn’t we already bust that little game? Just goes to show the ole college try doesn’t work when it comes to seeding appropriately ‘controversial’ questioners in the debate audience.
Anderson Cooper is wiggling.
