Busch Gardens’ Howl-O-Scream started last night with their Freaky Preview weekend. It may seem a little early for normal folk to get into the spirit, but the half price $30 tickets may convince you otherwise. Other than the savings, this is also a great time to see everything while it is still working. Traditionally the event opens with animatronics and other effects that end up breaking a week or two in, so if you go early you’ll be able to get the full effect.
I mentioned a little earlier that the DJ “mascot” sucks balls but beyond that I continue to be amazed at the quality of Howl-O-Scream, you’d think that a place like Universal would have a much better event but for the last 6 years Busch has consistently produced better mazes. I think Universal knows it, too, because this year they’re stepping it up with Freddy, Jason and Leatherface and 8 mazes to Busch’s 6. Oh, and they’ve got the Bill and Ted show which normally kicks much ass.
You’ve got 16 nights between now and October 28 to go, so don’t be a cheap ass sissy, get your tickets. Oh, and don’t forget to take advantage of the awesome aluminum beer bottles, or a few yards of beer sold in the park - it’ll give you that false sense of manliness you’ll need so you don’t cry like a little bitch in front of your old lady.
Bonus behind-the-scenes shot of the DGeh below. Oops, someone forgot to photoshop out his ears!

eh, that’s too expensive for my tastes. i like haunted houses and all, but still.
of course, isnt Universal Studios like $60 for their Halloween event?! for that, I want the rides open too(something about watching costumed patrons whizzing through the air on Hulk just makes me giggle), but I heard they arent.
Ive been to Salem a couple of times on Halloween and nothing really compares after that. like Mardi Gras….only with constumes! and less boobage. ok, so its not like Mardi Gras..
Having watched Go recently, I was reminded of that bizarre seven-month period somewhere between 1997 and 1998 when electronic music and DJ culture went like auditorium style mainstream. And then by 1999 it was showing up in barely indie movies with Jay Mohr in them. It’s at that point that you realize you just lost the sub in your subculture. I wonder what it means in the grand cycle of dumbing down of formerly cool shit when that same stuff is being referenced ten years later in a theme park. I think if I’ve got my calculations correct, Howl-o-Scream 2010 will feature a zombie version of The Shins. Scaring is Creepy.
Also, DJ Gollum is in full effect:
Last year I thought I’d beat the crowds and save a buck by going to the preview. Instead, I spent the entire night waiting in lines. We sat in one queue for no less than an hour for a maze that lasted less than five minutes. This year I’ll spend my $30 at the Independent and let the panhandlers scare me!
